Duke University in Durham, North
Carolina has long been known as one of the best medical schools in the country.
Students come from all across the globe to attend this prestigious school. The
school, itself was created in the year 1924 by James Buchanan Duke as a
memorial to his late father Washington Duke. The Duke family was a prominent
part of the Durham community. They were big into philanthropic endeavors and in
1924, James Duke's forming of the Duke Endowment gave way to Duke University.
Here is a list of schools and
dates, sort of a timeline of the origination of what is now known as Duke
University: Origination of Trinity University-1838, School of Law-1904,
Divinity School-1926, Graduate School-1926, School of Medicine-1930, School of
Nursing-1931, Pratt School of Engineering-1939, Fuqua School of Business-1969,
Sanford School of Public Policy-1971 and the Nicholas School of the Environment
opened in 1991.
The current student population at
Duke University is approximately sixty four hundred students in the full time
undergraduate program and seventy one hundred full time students in the
graduate program who make up a diverse group. The population of the newest
entering freshman class at Duke University was fifty percent female, fifty
percent male. Coming from all walks of life, nearly a quarter of the student
body comes from countries other than the United States. This makes Duke one of
the most diversified and evenly split campuses in the country.
There are currently sixty four
hundred students enrolled at Duke University in a full time undergraduate
program in addition to the seventy one hundred full time graduate students
enrolled. This brings the total student body population to just under thirteen
thousand, five hundred students. These students come from all around the world,
equaling an even cut across the board between males and females for the
entering freshman class of 2008.
Duke employs thirty three
thousand people between University and Medical Center employees. The ration of
University employees to students is eight to one. The students enjoy a close
and personal relationship with the staff and faculty on campus and in their
dorms.
Duke believes that young people
should be able to get the higher learning that will push them ahead in the
future. Because of the Duke Endowment, students who qualify for acceptance at
Duke are not subjected to financial analysis. This means that if a student is
deemed a good fit for the University but their family does not have the means
to cover the costs, the school will cover the costs for them, in full, for the
entirety of the undergraduate learning.
On the grounds of the University
is the Nasher Museum of Art. The Museum provides a cultural experience for the
entire community and outlying areas. Duke University is dedicated to the
betterment of all, including the surrounding counties. Duke continues its goal
to provide the best to those who have helped the community thrive throughout
the years.
